  • Iran's ballistic missiles bone of contention with West

Yemeni armed forces, supported by popular committees, fired Wednesday night a ballistic missile at the headquarters of Saudi Information and Electronic Warfare in Najran, southern Saudi Arabia.

In a statement, Colonel Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said that Saudi air defences had intercepted one missile, with another falling in an uninhabited desert outside of the capital.

Energy-rich Saudi Arabia, a fierce regional foe of Iran's, is already seeking USA help in starting a nuclear program of its own, giving rise to concerns that it might be trying to compete with Iran's nuclear program and create its own nuclear weapons program.

Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, wrote on Twitter: "Iran interpreted the JCPOA as concurrence of its regional hegemony".

Riyadh has long accused Tehran of supplying the rebels with ballistic missiles, a charge the latter rejects.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of supporting Huthis militants in Yemen.

Qatar has yet to issue a statement.

He said: "If I allowed this deal to stand, there would soon be a nuclear arms race in the Middle East".

Residents said they heard the sounds of planes at midnight and they accounted four separate powerful explosions on a family's house in Al-Azrakayeen district, north of the capital Sanaa.

In an anticipated decision, Trump withdrew from the deal on Tuesday, having previously said that Iran was in violation of the "spirit" of the global agreement.

"We've always said our concern about this agreement in 2015 was that Iran should not take it as carte blanche to go and expand its territorial influence", he said.

In an interview with Tasnim, ranking commander of Yemen's Army General Yahya al-Houthi said if Saudi Arabia continues to kill people of Yemen, Saudi vessels and sites at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait will become military targets of Yemen's missiles. "We have made it very clear that if Iran acquires a nuclear capability we will do everything we can to do the same".

"There is a real risk of escalation, especially between Iran and Israel". "We are trying to avoid at all costs direct military action with Iran, but Iran's behaviour such as this can not continue. The consequences could be severe", said Joost Hiltermann, Program Director, Middle East and North Africa at The International Crisis Group.
