World Health Organization has recorded 32 suspected or confirmed cases in Bikoro, including 18 deaths, between April 4 and May 9. Lab results are pending on the other nine cases which are suspected to be Ebola.

Salama also said the United Nations health organisation hoped to have a mobile lab up and running on site this weekend. The outbreak was declared three days ago.

The illness brought Africa to its knees earlier this decade - with more than 11,000 people being killed in an outbreak.

This is DRC's ninth outbreak of Ebola since the discovery of the virus in the country in 1976.

From 4 April through 9 May 2018, a total of 32 Ebola virus disease cases (among which two are confirmed, 18 probable and 12 suspected cases) were reported from Bikoro health zone, Equateur province, including 18 deaths.

There have been two confirmed cases of the virus and 17 deaths, the health ministry said on Tuesday. However, the disease is not as gruesome as has sometimes been reported (body organs don't liquiefy), which makes it hard to figure out what's Ebola and what's not.

"This is going to be tough and it's going to be costly to stamp out this outbreak", he stressed. "At all levels, this has been taken as the highest priority".

Salama said that World Health Organization was preparing for the green light and hoped to have a mobile laboratory operational over the weekend, and that both World Health Organization and the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres already had a team on the ground. By this weekend, the first mobile lab at the outbreak site should be up and running, Salama said. UNICEF, the UN Children's Fund, has also mobilised doctors and water, sanitation and hygiene specialists to help contain the spread of the disease.

"Public health emergency of global concern" means an extraordinary event which is determined, as provided in these Regulations: "(i) to constitute a public health risk to other States through the worldwide spread of disease and (ii) to potentially require a coordinated worldwide response". WHO will also work with national authorities in planning further public health measures such as vaccination campaigns. It will be boosted by another million pounds ($1.35 million) from the United Kingdom government, Wellcome said in a statement.

The WHO is still waiting on approval from the DRC to use the experimental Ebola vaccine, but plans for deployment are already under way as officials wait for a formal decision from the country's health ministry.

The rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine was in development for many years before the 2014 outbreak, but no one paid for clinical trials to prove it worked.
