A 104-year-old Australian scientist who had campaigned for the legalization of assisted dying in his home country has ended his life at a Swiss clinic, a representative from the pro-euthanasia group Exit International said.

Goodall had traveled to Switzerland to take advantage of the country's assisted-suicide laws.

"During the paperwork, he said 'what are we waiting for?' Dr Nitschke told AAP".

In his final hours at the Basel clinic, Prof Goodall enjoyed his favourite dinner: fish and chips and cheesecake.

As requested, Beethoven's Ode to Joy played on an iPad and family members wept as he died minutes after ingesting the lethal cocktail.

The 104-year-old took his own life yesterday after travelling to Switzerland where he could legally be helped to die.

"At my age, I get up in the morning".

"In fact his last words were: 'This is taking an awfully long time!'" Nitschke said.

Philip Nitschke, director of Exit International, said that before activating the drip, Goodall had to answer "several questions so he knew who he was, where he was and what he was about to do". "And I'm very happy to end it", Goodall said Thursday in the room where he died shortly after.

Goodall did not suffer from a terminal illness but said his quality of life had deteriorated in recent years and that he wanted to die, though he was barred from committing suicide in Australia.

Sky's Michelle Clifford said police and coroner officials would now need to visit the clinic to make sure the assisted suicide was carried out properly. In his final wishes, he said he didn't want a funeral or remembrance service.

Professor David Goodall at a press conference on May 9, where he discussed his death plan with reporters.

PERTH academic David Goodall's death was a final contribution to society, according to his daughter.

The oldest scientist Down Under made headlines two years ago when he was declared unfit to be on campus because he was a safety risk to himself. Assisted suicide was supposed to be meant for people who have lethal medical conditions or are in significant pain but Goodall's case is another example of how healthy people are killing themselves.

Assisted suicide is illegal in most countries around the world and was banned in Australia until the state of Victoria became the first to legalise the practice a year ago.

"I'm content to leave them undone".

A grandfather of 12, Dr Goodall moved from London to Australia as a child and turned 104 on 4 April.
