In Andhra Pradesh state in the south, at least 12 people were killed by lightning, said MV Sheshagiri Babu, the state's relief commissioner.

A total of 53 people have died due to the squall that affected several parts of Northern India during the intervening night of Sunday-Monday. Officials told BBC Hindi that casualties could go up further.

There were reports of 11 people injured in Delhi and two in Uttarakhand.

Meteorological officials say winds reached up to 109 km/h today, blowing down trees and power lines and demolishing homes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on a Twitter he had asked authorities to provide "all possible assistance" to the needy. All four states remain on high alert as officials warn of more thunderstorms over the next few days.

Earlier this month, more than 90 people died in deadly dust storms.

Gupta said 80 people were injured by the gusts that flattened almost 40 houses across India's most populous state. Authorities at the time said they were shocked by the ferocity of the storms, adding that it was one of the worst they had seen.
