"We will need to renegotiate European Union agreements to stop Italy suffocating", League leader Matteo Salvini said on Saturday after a day of talks with his 5-Star counterpart Luigi Di Maio.

"One of the hypotheses is to pick a third person who has a high profile and is trusted by Italian citizens and Italy's global partners", Vincenzo Spadafora, a close aide to 5-Star leader Luigi Di Maio, told the Corriere della Sera.

Their choice has not yet been announced, though Di Maio said on Sunday they were close to an "historic" agreement.

The parties are due to meet President Sergio Mattarella.

According to Italian media reports, their nominee for prime minister is likely be from a "third party" and will have to be able to make the eurosceptic nature of the new government workable with Brussels.

Around 70 days after the legislative elections that failed to produce a clear parliamentary majority, it would appear the League and the M5S have found some common ground to form the first anti-establishment government in Italy and western Europe.

Italy's 5-Star Movement and League neared a deal on Monday which they hope will fuse their very different election platforms into a workable coalition government, hours before pivotal talks with the country's president.

Five-Star secured 32% of the vote during the March 5 poll, with Lega coming out on top of a three-party right-wing alliance that includes former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia.
