  • Imran Khan termed Nawaz's statement a conspiracy to pressurize Pakistan

Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is facing criticism from all quarters following his admission on the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, has claimed his remarks were "grossly misinterpreted" by the media.

In an interview with the Dawn, Sharif who has been disqualified to hold public office for life by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case, criticised the delay in the conclusion of the Mumbai attacks trial.

Although Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and his cabinet members did not offer any statement, the ruling party did issue a statement clarifying that Sharif's statement was misquoted and blown out of proportion by Indian channels and a section of the Pakistani media.

In an exclusive interview to Dawn Nawaz Sharif was quoted saying on Friday in Multan: "Militant organisations are active. Explain it to me", he had said, in a clear reference to the Mumbai killings blamed on 10 Pakistani terrorists.

During his third term as prime minister, there had been differences between Sharif and the army over various issues, especially on relations with India, a person familiar with the issue told ET. "We must look into it", he added. Pakistan has so far not completed trial in the 26/11 case.

"Today Nawaz Sharif stands exposed before the nation".

In his tweet, Imran also stated that the former prime minister was not only adamant on destroying government institutions like the Supreme Court, Pakistan Army and National Accountability Bureau, but had also come down to putting future of Pakistan at stake.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Rehman said, "Is he (Sharif) an analyst to give such statements?" The army has consistently denied supporting terrorists, though in the past some Pakistani officials have admitted to alleged involvement in the Mumbai attacks. The six-man Supreme Court-mandated investigative team that brought about Sharif's latest downfall previous year also included two active members of the military's intelligence arms. In election season in Pakistan, opposition leaders have accused Sharif of being "pro-India" after his interview. Commonly called the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the city was under siege till November 29.

"The people serving on important positions should talk carefully", Khursheed Shah when asked to comment by media about Nawaz Sharif's controversial remarks about Mumbai attacks.

Without naming Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and Maulana Masood Azhar's militant organisations - Jamaat-ud-Dawah and Jaish-e-Mohammad - operating in the country with impunity, Sharif said: "Militant organisations are active in Pakistan..."

Pakistan has always been accused of supporting proxy insurgent groups that further its foreign policy objectives - from the claim on the disputed region of Kashmir to the installation of a pro-Pakistani government in Afghanistan.
