Robinson Cano Suspended 80 Games by Major League Baseball for Positive PED Test

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano faces an 80-game suspension for violating MLB's joint drug agreement, according to multiple reports.

Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was suspended for 80 games on Tuesday following a positive test for a performance-enhancing drug, Major League Baseball announced.

The news comes just two days after Cano fractured a bone in his right hand when he was hit by a pitch in Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

Canó's 80-game suspension is effective immediately.

The MLB released a statement, claiming Cano did not test positive for PED's, but he did test positive for Furosemide, a diuretic.

Eighty games is the standard suspension for a first-time offender. Cano hadn't missed a game this season and hasn't played in fewer than 150 games in any of the past 11 seasons.

The eight-time All-Star selection was batting.287 with four home runs and 23 RBIs this season, his fifth with Seattle. Cano is now 583 hits away from 3,000 and was a shoe-in for Cooperstown. Their other options are limited, with Andrew Romine serving as their backup infielder and Taylor Motter being the only other upper-minors infielder on the 40-man roster.
