Facebook estimates that 3-4% of monthly active users during the last three months of 2017 and first three months of 2018 were fake.

"This is in addition to the millions of fake account attempts we prevent daily from ever registering with Facebook", Rosen said in the post, noting that "most of the action we take to remove bad content is around spam and the fake accounts they use to distribute it". Today's report said Facebook disabled 583 million fake accounts during the first three months of this year, down from 694 million during the previous quarter.

Responses to rule violations include removing content, adding warnings to content that may be disturbing to some users while not violating Facebook standards; and notifying law enforcement in case of a "specific, imminent and credible threat to human life".

Facebook is sharing figures relating to the removal of hate speech and other content for the first time.

We're often asked how we decide what's allowed on Facebook - and how much bad stuff is out there.

In its first public release of such data, Facebook said that of every 10,000 pieces of content viewed on the social platform in the first quarter, an estimated 22 to 27 pieces contained graphic violence, up from an estimate of 16 to 19 late a year ago, Reuters reports.

Facebook has been in hot water following allegations of data privacy violations by Cambridge Analytica, an election consultancy that improperly harvested information from millions of Facebook users for the Brexit campaign and Donald Trump's United States presidency bid.

Facebook is struggling to catch much of the hateful content posted on its platform because the computer algorithms it uses to track it down still require human assistance to judge context, the company said Tuesday. The content audited included graphic violence, hate speech, adult nudity and sexual activity, spam, terrorist propaganda (IS, al-Qaeda and affiliates) and fake accounts.

Small doses of nudity and graphic violence still make their way onto Facebook, even as the company is getting better at detecting some objectionable content, according to a new report.

Facebook took action on 1.9 million pieces of content over terrorist propaganda. The problem with trying to proactively scour Facebook for hate speech is that the company's AI can only understand so much at the moment.

Only 38 percent of these were flagged by automation, which fails to interpret nuances like counter speech, self-referential comments or sarcasm. Facebook defines hate speech as a "direct attack on people based on protected characteristics - race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, and serious disability or disease".

However, the social network said this was up from 1.2 million at the end of 2017 and while the majority of the increase was down to improvements in its detection technology, some of the rise is due to an increase in such content appearing on the platform.
