North Carolina teachers join the thousands of educators across the US who have gone on strike this year, marching on Raleigh to demand higher wages and better funding for their classrooms Wednesday.

"On May 16th, thousands of teachers from across North Carolina are expected to travel to Raleigh for the "March For Students and Rally For Respect" gathering".

Walker has been teaching for about three years.

Congressman Walker says North Carolina leads the nation as far as what percentage of the budget goes toward education. Teachers will advocate for better pay and working conditions.

"We need people to judge us on what we've done", Woodhouse said of Republicans. He hopes the rally will encourage other people to go into teaching.

"We teach them how to make a difference the right way", North Meck teacher James Walker said.

More than 15,000 teachers signed up to attend the rally, but it's unclear how many will take the day off and come to the march. But many teachers contend the pay is still too low.

Perdue served as governor from 2009 to 2013.

"This decision has been made to demonstrate support for our teachers and ensure that student safety is never compromised". Multiple school districts and counties followed suit. In Colorado, a strike by teachers in the Pueblo City School District resulted in a 2% pay raise for educators on Monday.

McCann recently wrote an op-ed for The Herald-Sun saying he would be at work Wednesday while more than 1,000 of his colleagues have chose to take the day off. "I want you to know that I am roughly being paid $53 a day to educate your child". "I do not support the movement especially on the backs of our students".

The teachers plan to use a personal day and hold the event for just one day, but the long-term plan is to pressure lawmakers beyond Wednesday's events.

"They need tomorrow and by not having it, they're at risk of not passing their grade", Jarvis said. In Oklahoma, the teachers union secured raises and increases to school funding and say they'll focus on supporting pro-education candidates in upcoming elections.
