Reportedly Has Suspect In Biggest CIA Leak Ever, But No Charges

  • Former CIA engineer, 29, facing a child pornography charge is also suspected of leaking devastating secret agency documents to Wikileaks

Schulte has not been charged in connection with the breach, but is instead being held on child pornography charges in New York City, according to court documents.

Schulte worked at the agency as a software engineer who helped design malware used to break into the computers of terrorism suspects and other targets. In March 2017, the officials were already smarting from an unprecedented leak of National Security Agency software exploits seven months earlier by a mysterious group calling itself the Shadow Brokers.

Weaver added that the fact the leak could happen was more significant as it came well after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden released masses of documents about the agency's surveillance of American citizens in 2013.

The Washington Post first reported on Schulte's relation to the case.

He is suspected of passing classified information to the WikiLeaks website.

A government prosecutor disagreed with what he called the "characterization" by Schulte's attorney that "those search warrants haven't yielded anything that is consistent with [Schulte's] involvement in that disclosure".

US federal prosecutor Matthew Laroche detailed the investigation during a January 8, 2018 hearing in a NY federal courtroom.

Amazon On Lookout For 2nd Headquarter Amid Seattle Tax Row
The number of homeless students in the city's public schools has tripled, to almost 4,300 last school year. "Make no mistake. But Seattle's Chamber of Commerce said that "taxing jobs will not fix our region's housing and homelessness problems ".

Part of that investigation, Laroche said, was analyzing whether a technology known as Tor, which allows Internet users to hide their location, "was used in transmitting classified information".

The Post reports that federal prosecutors obtained a search warrant a year ago for personal computers and hand-written notes from Schulte's apartment, but that investigators didn't find any evidence linking Schulte to the disclosure.

Schulte's father, Roger, said he was scared to death. He has pleaded not guilty. The former prosecutor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an open investigation, also said that if government lawyers acknowledged in a public hearing that Schulte was a target, they probably suspect he acted alone. Prosecutors say he had a cache of it on a server he maintained. He was in the CIA for the development of a computer code to the intelligence of foreign adversaries.

The full scope of the case against Schulte is unclear.

The FBI said they removed NSA and Central Intelligence Agency paperwork from Schulte's home, as well as a personal computer, tablet, phone and other electronics.

"Due to these unfortunate coincidences the Federal Bureau of Investigation ultimately made the snap judgment that I was guilty of the leaks and targeted me", Schulte said.

Since he's been jailed, Schulte has created a Facebook page where he posts articles criticizing the criminal justice system.
