President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would soon push for full funding of his promised wall along the USA border with Mexico, which could spark budget battles in a Congress fractured over his immigration policy.

Trump has clashed with the liberal state repeatedly about myriad issues environmental regulations, budget policies and minority rights - yet the most divisive has been the disagreement over immigration enforcement.

Principal Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah told reporters during the daily on-camera briefing Monday that illegal immigration continues to be a frustration for the President and the administration.

"We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in, we're stopping a lot of them", Trump said in response to a statement about the MS-13 gang. We are a nation of laws.

The Trump administration has gone to federal court to invalidate California's sanctuary law that went into effect in January.

City and county officials from across the state who oppose California's sanctuary-state law sat down with President Donald Trump Wednesday to voice their objections to the law, and they got a pep talk from the president who slammed the state for failing to crack down on illegal immigration.

The Democratic leader's tweet storm comes the same day Trump held a roundtable discussion with California Republican lawmakers where he praised them for holding a "rebellion" against the state's sanctuary policies.

The president thanked the "courageous mayors and sheriffs and local leaders" from across the state who, he said, "bravely resisted California's deadly and unconstitutional sanctuary state laws". In a Facebook post on Friday, Mayor Abed wrote that he was "honored to be invited to the White House to meet President Trump" and "proud to share Escondido's successful policies to keep our community safe under the rule of law".

California Governor Jerry Brown said "Trump is lying on immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of California".

He has often conflated the gang with immigrants in general.

"To me, that's obstruction of justice", President Trump said. "We, the citizens of the fifth largest economy in the world, are not impressed", he said.

Kevin de Leon, the author of the sanctuary state law who is challenging Sen.

"There are more people in California than you know that support what you are doing".

Sheriff Margaret Mims of Fresno County said the statute barred Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities from using her databases "to find the bad guys", or from entering prisons to locate people who might be in the country illegally. "That Democrats gave us that law and they don't want to do anything about it".
