The tropical system became a subtropical storm Friday, the hurricane center said. The rain will continue to push northward bringing a 90 percent chance of rain by Monday night and a 100 percent chance of rain on Tuesday.

Forecasters say 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain is expected on saturated ground with isolated areas getting up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain.

Winds from the storm are forecast to hit Florida's Panhandle on Sunday night.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect along the entire Gulf Coast. The NWS said a flash flood watch would be in effect from Saturday evening through Tuesday evening for southeastern MS, much of southern Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle.

Alberto is expected to produce heavy rainfall and flooding over western Cuba, South Florida and the Florida Keys, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday. Phil Bryant authorized the use of the National Guard, his office said in a statement.

Alberto Nearing Hurricane Strength

Alberto is the first named storm of 2018, and it comes days before the Atlantic hurricane season officially starts on June 1. Tropical storm force winds can be expected across southern and western parts of Georgia, Alabama, and southern and western MS throughout the day on Monday (see Fig. 1).

A tropical storm watch is in effect for parts of MS and Alabama, meaning the conditions for a full storm are possible in the next 48 hours.

At about 2 p.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was centered about 65 miles north-northwest of Cuba and moving north at 13 mph. There were no immediate reports of emergencies.

Parts of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana have already seen heavy rain this week, and further deluges could leave those areas vulnerable to flash flooding and river flooding. The higher initial impacts of surge, rain, wind, would be eastward into the western and central Florida Panhandle, and later into Escambia Co AL and Conecuh Co AL.
