  • Subtropical Storm Alberto continues to churn north through the Gulf of Mexico

Subtropical Storm Alberto moved to within 50 miles of the Florida panhandle Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Strong storms possible Thursday and Friday: As Alberto moves away, a different type of summertime weather pattern kicks in; that could deliver some intense summertime storms on Thursday and Friday. The county of more than 11,700 is about 70 miles south of Panama City.

Jason Powell said he was seeking to keep his children entertained until Alberto blows through his Florida Panhandle vacation spot.

The heaviest rain bands and strongest winds began coming ashore around 10 a.m. Monday in Panama City Beach.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Suwannee River in the Big Bend area of Florida to the Mississippi/Alabama border.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who issued a state of emergency on Saturday in all of the state's 67 counties, said on Sunday that the Florida National Guard has 5,500 guard members ready to be deployed if needed. Ivey activated the state's emergency operations center while the Alabama National Guard activated its high water evacuation teams. He said Alberto's biggest threat will be its heavy rains, with forecasts of anywhere from four to 12 inches (10-30 centimeters) of rain in some areas. Up to 2 inches of rain could fall in the Triangle by Tuesday morning, according to the weather service, with Johnston County and places south and east getting up to 3 inches.

"The potential for flash flooding, mudslides and landslides will be very high in the [North Carolina] mountains", Panovich said.

A flash-flood warning is in effect for the Northwest Florida area until 8:45 p.m. Monday. Alberto was expected to bring heavy rain and severe wind to Florida and other parts of the Gulf Coast.

The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Subtropical Storm Alberto, gained strength as it approached the northern Gulf Coast, emptying out beaches in Florida ahead of Memorial Day.

Even with subtropical storm Alberto heading for the Panhandle, most locals and visitors alike were not letting it spoil their Memorial Day weekend on Sunday.

State officials urged their residents to monitor the storm.

It's also worth pointing out that extremely heavy rain continues to fall over Cuba from a trailing moisture plume ... this is the fifth consecutive day.

"I strongly encourage everyone to be safe and stay informed", Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement.

Alberto marks the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season, which officially begins June 1.

In late May 2016, Tropical Storm Bonnie hit parts of the Southeastern United States and the Bahamas, costing more than $640,000 in damage and causing two deaths. "There are no strong climate signals saying it's going to be extremely active, like past year, or extremely weak", said Gerry Bell, the lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, speaker with reporters Thursday.
