  • 'Idiotic': NBA coach rips NFL's new anthem policy

Marshall added that while he doesn't like the league's new anthem policy, he understands why it was put in place.

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr called the NFL's new anthem policy, which will prevent players from kneeling during the national anthem, "idiotic".

The NFL announced Wednesday it would begin levying fines against teams whose players kneel during the national anthem, a new policy aimed at ebbing a wave of players protesting against police brutality.

NBC's Craig Melvin said a former player told him "players are already talking about other ways in which they can protest".

According to ESPN, the new policy mandates players ad personnel to stand during the anthem "if they are on the field during the performance", but allows them "the option to remain in the locker room if they prefer".

The owner of the New York Jets also took a more conciliatory approach, promising not to punish any player who continues to protest against social injustice in full view of fans.

"I think it's just typical of the NFL", Kerr said.

North and South Koreas leaders to meet
At the Saturday meeting, Kim was with his sister Kim Yo-jong and his top aide Kim Yong chol in charge of inter-Korean affairs. Trump tweeted Sunday that North Korea "has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day".

"I'm proud to be in a league that understands patriotism in America is about free speech", Kerr said.

The previous NFL policy stated that players "should" stand for the national anthem, ESPN reports.

If the National Basketball Association is truly a "league that understands patriotism in America is about free speech and peacefully protesting", as Kerr contends, it will get rid of its anthem policy. "With the conversations that we've had as the players coalition with the NFL, the conversations that we've had with the league office, with Roger Goodell, with Troy Vincent, I thought that we were on a good track and that we would be coming toward an amicable relationship and working toward the things that we want to see".

Kerr went on to call out the NFL's seemingly willful misreading of the nature of the protests, and note the differences between how the National Football League and NBA handled the idea of patriotism and its intersection with sports. The players, in an attempt to show unity, stood in the tunnel that leads to the field while the "Star Spangled Banner" was played.

Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin (Md.) praised the NFL's decision to fine players who don't stand for the national anthem Thursday.

In a new tweet, McCain said that she never goes "on tv and do or say anything because it's easy - I say it because it's what I believe in". The team's chairman, Christopher Johnson, said no player would be disciplined for protesting the anthem and that he was willing to pay whatever fine the league imposed.

The president criticized the protests at a rally last September in a tirade where he suggested that players who kneel should be fired.
