Atlanta resident Yvonne Mason, who retired last year after teaching middle and high school students in SC for 17 years, said that the letter she received bearing the president's signature was littered with mistakes, including 11 instances of improper capitalisation of words including "state" and "president".

Mason identified 11 instances of faulty capitalization in Trump's letter, as he capitalized terms such as "nation", "federal", "president" and "state", and turned common nouns into proper nouns.

And toward the bottom: "OMG this is WRONG!"

Retired English teacher Yvonne Mason has spent much of her life correcting students' writing.

The letter, signed by President Donald Trump, would barely have received a passing grade if a high schooler had written it, Yvonne Mason, who retired last year after a 17-year teaching career in SC, told The Greenville News last week.

Photos of the letter, which has since been mailed back to the White House, has attracted hundreds of shares and likes since it was posted on Facebook last week. "If someone is capable of doing better, then they should do better", she told the Times.

"It was a poorly worded missive", she said.

Instead, it listed a series of actions taken after the shooting, like listening sessions, meetings with lawmakers and the STOP School Violence Act, a bill that would authorise $500 million over 10 years for safety improvements at schools but had no provisions related to guns.

"I did not mention the dangling modifier".

A retired Atlanta schoolteacher has corrected a presidential letter and sent it back to Donald Trump so he can learn from his mistakes.

"It's stylistically appalling", she said.

Yvonne Mason said she does not abide poor writing.

"I had written to them in anger, to tell you the truth", she told the Times.

After receiving Mason's letter, the White House responded to the retired teacher with a letter signed under President Donald Trump's name.

There is no word if Mason's critique was received, as the White House has not commented on the issue. Lindsey Graham sent "beautiful" letters that struck a tone that "makes me more important than him", she said.

She held back from putting a grade on the paper.

"You're important. You need to be a part of this, you need to pay attention to what's going on", she said. "They aren't changing my mind".
