Citing poor treatment, Trump will pardon conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza

  • Trump to give 'full pardon' to Dinesh D'Souza

D'Souza is the latest figure to get a reprieve from the president, who a year ago pardoned former Phoenix-area sheriff Joe Arpaio, calling him a patriot who was unfairly treated by the Obama administration.

At the time, the legal limit for an individual contribution was $5,000.

As part of his guilty plea, D'Souza admitted that he "knew what he was doing was wrong and something the law forbids", the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY said in a statement. "But now you have hope - you really have hope", Trump said.

Experts say Trump's pardon instead looks like a message to Michael Cohen, who is also being investigated for campaign finance fraud.

"In a tweet celebrating his pardon, D'Souza said "(President Barack) Obama & his stooges tried to extinguish my American dream & destroy my faith in America.

D'Souza tweeted his thanks to the president a few hours after the news broke.

The acting NY A.G. told reporters that there is now an urgency to "close New York's double jeopardy loophole and ensure that anyone who evades federal justice by virtue of a politically expedient pardon can be held accountable". D'Souza pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight months in a halfway house and five years' probation, along with a $30,000 fine. Long lost to Democratic Sen.

In response, D'Souza tweeted his excitement over Trump's decision.

D'Souza, who made the documentary "2016: Obama's America", entered the plea a week after the federal judge overseeing the case rejected his claim that he was selectively prosecuted. D'Souza said as much as recently as 2017.

D'Souza was a policy analyst for the late President Ronald Reagan and as a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

In February, Mr. D'Souza was disinvited from a speaking appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference after mocking the Parkland, Fla., shooting survivors on Twitter. Despite the backlash, D'Souza is scheduled to speak at a two-day event being put on next month by the Republican Party of Florida.
