  • Republican Missouri Governor Eric Greitens has resigned amid his sexual misconduct scandal

Reaction to Gov. Eric Greitens' resignation from other Missouri politicians was immediate, with fellow Republican and United States Sen.

The 44-year-old Rhodes Scholar and ex-Navy SEAL made the announcement Tuesday.

Gardner originally brought charges against Greitens over that alleged misconduct, too - specifically, a felony violation of privacy charge.

"Today, I am announcing that I will be resigning as governor of Missouri effective Friday, June 1st at 5 p.m." he said".

In his press conference Tuesday, May 29, Greitens, whose resignation is effective Friday, June 1, said "the last few months have been incredibly hard for me, for my family, for my team, for my friends, and many, many people that I love". In the interest of pursing justice to its fullest lengths, we will continue until our work on the case is completed. Spokesman Parker Briden did not offer any further details.

Greitens said that the investigation that he faces is too intense for him to continue to serve as the governor of Missouri. A House investigatory committee had subpoenaed Greitens to testify next Monday during a special monthlong session focused exclusively on his potential discipline. That love remains. I am thankful for all those who worked beside me, sweated beside me.

Greitens' brashness alienated some GOP legislators even before his affair became public in January.

State lawmakers in Jefferson City were moving forward with hearings that could have led to impeachment, and Mr. Greitens had been subpoenaed to testify before them next week.
