Robinson's predicament was summed up by Leeds Live reporter, Stephanie Finnegan, who wrote on Twitter: "Moral of the story: if you want to stay out of jail, don't go ONLINE and discuss or publish details of a court case that hasn't been reported in the media - leave it to the PROFESSIONALS".

The ex-EDL leader was told his actions may have derailed the long running trial, potentially costing taxpayers "hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds".

In footage that was played in the court on Friday, the right-wing activist, 35, of Wilstead, Bedfordshire, was seen filming himself and people involved in the trial.

Robinson, from Bedfordshire, pleaded guilty to a charge of contempt of court.

The reporting restrictions that were initially placed on Robinson's sentence were lifted following a legal challenge on Tuesday. He was found guilty of filming in Canterbury Crown Court past year.

Robinson live-streamed his own arrest, in which he was taken into charge by seven police officers and told he was being arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace.

His barrister, Matthew Harding, said Robinson now felt "deep regret" after realising the potential consequences of his actions.

A spokesman for The Independent said: "After Robinson's arrest was broadcast live on social media and his assistants reported his imprisonment, the reporting restriction was effectively made redundant". Video of the protests in the United Kingdom have been widely shared across social media, as has footage of supporters holding smaller sympathy protests in Australia, Tel Aviv and Germany.

The far-right leader was already serving a suspended sentence for 18 months for contempt of court over a case in Canterbury past year.

The far-right were also critical of the lack of media coverage of Robinson's conviction - which they claimed was proof of a conspiracy to silence him.
