Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub could be announced as soon as Monday (MSFT)

  • A Microsoft cloud... sorta

GitHub is an online code repository which was formally founded in 2008 by Chris Wanstrath and Tom Preston-Werner.

Why would Microsoft make this deal?

Murmurs about the acquisition bubbled up late last week as the CEO-less GitHub was reportedly in talks with Microsoft about a sale. It has been struggling to find a CEO after Wanstrath stepped down from the position.

The deal is expected to help Microsoft by adding programming tools and partner with a company that has become a key way in how Microsoft writes its software.

The coding company is one of the biggest resources in the world for software developers. Many engineers use the site to store their code, keep tabs on updates, and even use it as a discussion forum.

Despite all those users, Github was not making money, and it probably wasn't long for the world as a independent company.

He was forced to resign from his position over an investiture dispute with Rajoy, which left Spain stuck in a political stalemate. Sanchez, however, refused to go quietly. "For the first time we may get a prime minister who didn't win elections", he retorted.

In the short term, nothing is likely to change very much given the central role Github plays in the software development process. It is mostly used for computer code.

In early May, Microsoft revealed a new partnership with GitHub that was meant to bring the power of Azure DevOps services to GitHub users.

Those fears might be overstated.

Apparently, this isn't the first time that Microsoft has considered purchasing GitHub. If this acquisition falls through, Microsoft will benefit immensely by gaining access to millions of developers and companies who can prove to be potential users for Microsoft's cloud services and other technology products.

They can also use Gitlab, which quickly capitalized on developer angst Sunday with a live YouTube video explaining how to get up and running with its similar service, although less than 200 people were watching it when I joined about ten minutes after it got started.
