Health officials in Guwahati have given out advisory to take precautions against the deadly Nipah virus which killed 13 people in a recent outbreak in Kerala.

The number of confirmed Nipah virus cases has risen to 17 with the National Institute of Virology, Pune, finding its presence in the blood sample of a 28-year-old person from Karassery here, the sources said. The instruction was issued on the basis of the assumption that a person who had died the other day had contracted the virus during treatment there.

Meanwhile, as part of "Nipah alert", state health authorities asked those who visited Kozhikode Medical College casualty, CT scan room and waiting room on May 14 to contact the state Nipah cell immediately.

"We are getting ready to tackle the second phase as there are chances that the virus has spread as it is contagious", the state health minister said. Earlier, samples of cattle, goats, pigs, and insect bats that were sent were also tested negative. However, there are 1,949 persons now on the list of those who have been in contact with the infected.

The Nipah virus (NiV) infection in humans has a range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic infection to the acute respiratory syndrome and fatal encephalitis, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Following the Nipah scare, the Kozhikode district administration has postponed reopening of schools in the district after summer holidays till June 12. Kozhikode District collector UV Jose has requested local courts to suspend their operations till the situation improves. The first two cases of the virus had emerged in 2001 and 2007. The advisory issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday said that no incidence of the virus has been reported from the Capital.
