  • US China at odds over South China Sea

"The United States military presence in the South China Sea is greater than that of China and other countries that surround the seas combined", Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular briefing.

The Chinese government and the Chinese people resolutely oppose USA arms sales to Taiwan as well as any official contact with Taiwan and upgrading ties with Taiwan in any way, said He Lei, vice president of the Academy of Military Science of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

The South China Sea, a key trade route, is subject to overlapping claims by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

"But violation of China's sovereignty will not be allowed", said Lieutenant General He Lei, vice-president of the Academy of Military Science and head of China's delegation.

China's placement of weapons systems on manmade islands in the South China Sea is created to intimidate and coerce others in the region, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Saturday, laying out a sharp criticism of Beijing at an global security forum and threatening larger consequences if militarization continues.

"China's policy in the South China Sea stands in stark contrast to the openness that our strategy promotes, it calls into question China's broader goals", said Mattis.

China's deployment of defensive facilities on its islands in the South China Sea is legitimate and necessary, a senior Chinese military official said on Saturday.

"I think all regional countries with the sharp eyes hope the USA can play a constructive role, and not be a destroyer but a contributor to the regional peace and stability", Hua said.

USA assertions that China is militarising the are "ridiculous", China said on Thursday, after Secretary said Washington would confront China's actions in the disputed waterways.

Senior Col. Zhao Xiaozhuo said a US move a couple years ago to send two warships into China's "territorial waters" was a violation of law, and an "obvious provocation to China's national security and territorial integrity".

The U.S., he said, remains committed to ensuring free and open transit in the region.

Mr Mattis also touched on Taiwan, a longstanding dispute between the United States and China.

Talking about the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Mattis said that the issue of US troops in South Korea was "not on the table" at the June 12 meet.

"Mattis' speech was negative", Zhao said in an interview afterward. While the operation had been planned months in advance, and similar operations have become routine, it came at a particularly sensitive time and just days after the Pentagon withdrew an invitation to China for a major USA -hosted naval drill.

Last week, two United States warships came within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Islands - which are claimed by China, Vietnam and Taiwan - and carried out manoeuvring operations.
