Giuliani:?Special Counsel Trying To 'Frame' Trump In Russia Probe

07 June, 2018, 03:50 | Author: Carlos George
  • Rudy Giuliani: President Trump could pardon himself, but he probably wouldn’t

The topic came up Sunday as Giuliani spoke with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" as the pair discussed Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of possible collusion between Trump and Russian Federation to impact the 2016 presidential race.

"If I were president of the United States and I had a lawyer that told me I could pardon myself, I think I would hire a new lawyer", Grassley told CNN.

The talk of self-pardoning has raised eyebrows amid the roiling debate over the Russian Federation meddling inquiry and the president's cooperation - or lack of it. Trump has issued a series of ever-sharper tweets attacking the Mueller probe as politically motivated and insisting there was "no collusion" between his campaign team and Russian Federation.

He added that it would be "political malpractice" for a president to pardon himself.

His attacks come as the special counsel and Trump's legal team negotiate whether the president will sit down for an interview.

Moscow officials have denied allegations of interference, calling the accusations groundless and absurd.

It comes as the White House and Mueller's team were girding for a possible high-stakes legal showdown over whether Trump will agree to or be forced to be interviewed by investigators, as well as a possible impeachment push that could result from the probe.

President Donald Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani said Sunday that the president's constitutional powers probably include the ability to pardon himself. "When he says the President is not contemplating something, I have no faith in that whatsoever", he said. "I think it would probably get answered by, gosh, that's what the constitution says".

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow said in July that "the president was not, did not, draft the response". Pardoning yourself is another. "But I don't think a president should pardon themselves". House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" that he doesn't think the President should grant himself a pardon.

It says he can pardon federal crimes.

Giuliani has become a lightning rod during his tenure on Mr. Trump's team, drawing the president's ire for a series of scattershot interviews. As early as last summer, as Mueller's probe proceeded, the president began quietly asking advisers about his power to pardon aides, family members and even himself.

"We said, 'Well, we're not going to have a summit under those circumstances, '" Giuliani said.
