  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with the President of the United States Donald J. Trump in the Oval Office

Now, the G7 summit has been transformed into an exercise in pure survival for the prime minister: prevent U.S. President Donald Trump from taking a wrecking ball to this exclusive club of the world's leading democracies.

Trump, who has recently clashed with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over his decision to impose tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminum, accused Trudeau of gouging the USA with his own tariffs.

When Trudeau pressed Trump on national security justification for tariffs on Canada Trump responded: 'didn't you guys burn down the WH?' That was Britain during the War of 1812 http://www.cnn.com/2018/06/06/politics/war-of-1812-donald-trump-justin-trudeau-tariff/index.html ... "An opportunity for friends and allies to come together and have a direct conversation".

Trump has been unrelenting since the tariffs were first announced in March, and he is now catching flak from some of his closest allies.

Mr. Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, told reporters on Wednesday that the US administration won't back down on the Trump trade and tariffs dispute with USA allies.

It remains uncertain whether the G7 will even release a final communiqué, given the deep disputes that Mr. Trump has with the other leaders on trade, Iran and the environment.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has just wrapped up a meeting with Trump where they discussed trade and North Korea.

"There will be no world hegemony if we know how to organise ourselves".

Macron has previously accused China of pursuing hegemony in Asia.

The official said that France wants any joint statement to state that trade should be open, fair and free among members of the G-7 and beyond, and that any attempt to jeopardize the global trade system would constitute a threat.

It also comes hours after Trudeau said that it is "inconceivable and quite frankly insulting" that the Trump administration would invoke national security in justifying the tariffs.

"Our common goal is to try to find a text that can be signed by everyone".

"A trade war doesn't spare anyone".

Last June, the president confirmed that he would remove the us from the Paris climate agreement, fulfilling a campaign promise he had made to voters.

"We know there will certainly be frank and at times hard conversations around the G7 table, particularly with the American president on trade, on tariffs", he said.

"We are all engaged in conflicts in Syria, in Iraq, in the Sahel, in different places in the world".

Earlier today, The Washington Post reported that Trump isn't is exactly excited about his trip to The Great White North. As a Cold War-era safeguard, the law permitted a broad "national security" exception, similar to the one in the WTO. "For me it's a question of principle".

Trump showed no sign of backing down on Thursday, first taking to Twitter to accuse both France and Canada of imposing massive tariffs on US goods and then accusing Trudeau of "being so indignant".

"Trump is very selfish and I think he views flattery as a one-way street where he gets flattered and then there's no real reciprocal benefit going back the other direction", the official said.

In her dealings with Macron and other leaders, Janning said, Merkel has been attempting "to at least keep the consensus among the other countries intact".
