Prior to the announcement, millions of Indian policymakers, celebrities, business leaders, innovators, environmentalists and activists gathered for weeks of activities aimed at taking action against plastic pollution. We have launched the Namami Gange initiative.

"Plastic pollution is now entering our food chain". Several environmental related programs were organized to mark the occasion. Even the high court in March 28, 2014 gave directions to enforce the plastic ban seriously after kilos of plastic bags were removed from the stomach of a cow through operation.

Tuesday, June 5 was World Environment Day, and this year's theme, set by the United Nations, was "beat plastic pollution".

Anthony Nyong, AfDB's Director for Climate Change and Green Growth, said "the statistics about plastic pollution are alarming. These disposable plastics are known as "single use" plastics". "The large numbers of people that have turned out really shows this an issue we all care about", he tweeted.

Each year, World Environment Day has a theme which major corporations, non-governmental organisations, communities, governments and celebrities worldwide adopt to promote environmental awareness.

"World Environment Day is not just a celebration of the wonder of the natural world it is an opportunity to reflect on our relationship with that world and mobilize global action for causes that unite us", Erik Solheim, Head of UN Environment said.

Urging the states to work together for the country to achieve its environment targets within a year, the Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday said that only 60 per cent of 25,000 tonnes of "plastic pollution" generated daily gets recycled.

Most of this plastic garbage clogging waterways and landfill is single-use items like straws, bags and cutlery.

The Minister said rapid urbanisation and economic development in numerous developing countries, had led to increase plastic use and plastic pollution, saying there were more plastics in the ocean now.

"It's time for the New Zealand government to step-up as a leader on the plastic crisis, and not fall for false solutions". United Nations estimates say that every year the world uses 500 million plastic bags, half of which are used just once. This is a threat not only to marine life such as coral reefs but also birds and animals. In 2008, Rwanda became one of the first African countries to impose a complete ban on thin plastic bags as part of its Vision 2020 plan for sustainability.
