Democrats hoping for huge Election Day turnout to keep House dreams alive

  • Why New Jersey’s primaries hold the key to Democrats’ hopes of a House majority

The ads caused plenty of consternation from Republicans, who accused Democrats of slamming their own policies.

Political scientist Jack Pitney, who teaches at Claremont McKenna College, notes that between 1946 and 2014 there were 18 midterm elections and a member of the Brown family was on the California statewide ballot in 15 of them, either Jerry Brown, his father, former Gov. Edmund G.

For all the focus on various California scenarios, it's nearly certain that the results won't be settled Tuesday night. In fact, indicators have moved the other direction over the past several months.

That has Democrats nationwide breathing a sigh of relief.

There is no more fertile terrain than California, which features seven Republican seats in districts won by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are considered the top Democratic hopefuls.

Down the Pacific Highway is the state's 49th Congressional District, where weekly protests lasting 67 weeks are credited with driving Rep. Darrell Issa into retirement, Democratic congressional candidate Mike Levin slouched in front of his laptop making calls to supporters and asking them if they had already mailed in their votes.

Because of California's unusual primary system, Trump's party faces the embarrassing prospect of not qualifying any candidate for the governor's race or the U.S. Senate. But, with good reason, most of the national focus is on California.

The fight for the House centers here in the three battleground districts touching Orange County - where vacant seats, a weakened incumbent and changing demographics have fueled both hopes of a blue wave and intense gamesmanship to make it happen.

It was almost four months ago that the campaign for Mai Kahn Tran, a first-time Democratic candidate who quickly fundraised and gathered endorsements of groups such as Emily's List, told ABC News that the party and the Democratic National Committee (DCCC) preferred moneyed candidates.

If Pete D'Alessandro's showing in Iowa's Third Congressional district provides any clues, that answer is no.

Elsewhere, San Francisco will choose a new leader following the sudden death of Mayor Ed Lee, and a Northern California judge, Aaron Persky, faces a recall for the light sentence he gave a former Stanford University swimmer who sexually assaulted a drunken woman. It will be worth watching what her final totals are coming out of the primary and heading into a potential two-Democrat match in November.

When asked whether Republicans are anxious they'll lose its majority in November, Denham said no.

It was a different story in MS, where 66-year-old Gladys Cruz wasn't sure which Republican she would support in the state's Senate primary, but she wants whoever wins to firmly support Trump.

Even so, Republicans are hoping his presence on the fall ballot, if he makes it, would energize Republicans, driving turnout and helping GOP candidates down the ballot. "I think there were a lot of Jeff's friends trying to help get the second Republican through".

It means that Sen.

Farther west in Huntington Beach, it's a tale of two Californias as 14 candidates battle it out for the second spot in a primary against incumbent Dana Rohrabacher in the 48th Congressional District. Still, Feinstein enters in a very strong position, winning 1.2 million more votes than de León Tuesday night.

In New Jersey, Sen. They are Democrat Frank Pallone in the 6th District, Republican Leonard Lance in the 7th District, Democrat Bill Pascrell the 9th District and Democrat Donald Payne the 10th District.

What's more, Democrats turned out at higher levels than Republicans in every single contest in the state where there was a competitive primary.

Three thousand miles away from California, former federal prosecutor and Navy pilot Mikie Sherrill bested a field of party rivals in the race to replace retiring Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.

National Democrats have spent more than $7 million trying to curb and fix the damage inflicted by Democrats attacking each other in districts opened by retiring Republican Reps. He underperformed in his Democratic primary, finishing with just 62 percent of the vote.

Republican businessman Bob Hugin claimed the Republican nomination to face Menendez this fall.

Tester's brand has withstood close races before, and Gov. Steve Bullock showed in 2016 that Democrats can win in Montana in the Trump era. Neal Tapio, has called for an end to the Native American reservation system in the United States.

Senate contests are mostly getting overlooked Tuesday, but vulnerable Democratic incumbent Jon Tester of Montana will learn who he'll have to contend with this fall. Right now, Democrats control 193 seats, Republicans control 235 and seven seats are vacant.

That's certainly the case for vulnerable Alabama Rep. Martha Roby, a Republican who faces a hard primary challenge after becoming the first to withdraw her endorsement of Trump in 2016. Roby fell short of 50% in part because she is paying a price in deep-red Alabama for saying in 2016 that she would not vote for Trump.

But her district went for Trump by 30 points, and she drew a primary opponent. There is a catch here, though - Bright isn't a standard Republican.
