Fekir twist: Liverpool pulled plug on deal

  • Nabil Fekir to Liverpool Lyon have denied any transfer agreement with the Reds

The two clubs had been discussing a deal for the playmaker worth 60m euros (£52.75m) - 55m (£48.35m) plus a maximum of 5m (£4.4m) add-ons.

Olympique Lyonnais informs that the tripartite negotiations with the Liverpool club and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded and that Olympique Lyonnais has made a decision to put an end to this negotiation tonight at 8:00 p.m. (7 p.m. UK).

With the World Cup now on the horizon, a cooling-off period may well yet see Lyon and Liverpool re-open discussions-unless all is not as it seems with Lyon's statement.

Fekir, 24, had been one of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp's prime summer targets.

"In this period of transfers where the slightest rumour is often presented as a reality, Olympique Lyonnais recalls that only the information disseminated by the club on its website is authentic".

Liverpool was hoping to add Fekir to their off-season signings of Monaco midfielder Fabinho and RB Leipzig's Naby Keita.

Liverpool appeared to be on the verge of signing Nabil Fekir according to French Football Federation president Noël Le Graët, who claimed the Olympique Lyon star passed a medical while on location at France's pre-World Cup training camp.

It came as a damaging blow to Liverpool, who have made a fantastic start to the summer transfer window but are yet to replace Philippe Coutinho.

Speculation is swirling about why the deal has not been rubber-stamped.

The Mirror's report intimates that Liverpool had proposed to Lyon that they lower the transfer fee because of those concerns - and needless to say, the French side did not play ball.

Liverpool did not attempt, suggest or offer to renegotiate any terms for Fekir.
