Afghan security officials on Saturday said in the past 24 hours the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), Taliban and Daesh suffered heavy losses in battles in a number of provinces. The clerics also recommended a ceasefire with the Taliban, which Ghani endorsed.

The militants said foreign forces would be excluded from the ceasefire and that operations against them would continue.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the truce was intended for the Eid holiday and would not affect the group's larger objectives, which include the departure of foreign troops from Afghanistan.

However, the district administrative chief Amanuddin Qureshi confirmed the incident said doznes of Taliban insurgents launched a coordinated attack on security posts in Baghcha and Kalokh areas, leaving at least 25 people dead. Ghani's surprise announcement underscored his desire to establish a peace process that could put an end to a conflict that even his backers say cannot be won militarily.

The Taliban's cease-fire is expected to run from June 12 to June 14, while the government's will last until around June 20.

Ghani renewed his peace overture with the Taliban in a regional conference in Kabul in February.

More than two weeks ago the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson, said some Taliban leaders were in contact with the Afghan government.

"You can't end 40 years of war in a few days, but this is definitely the best chance for a peace process since at least since the US surge" of troops under President Barack Obama in 2010-2011, said Vikram Singh, a former Pentagon and State Department official who is now a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington. It wound down its combat mission in 2014 but its Resolute Support mission comprises nearly 16,000 troops from around 40 countries.

However, U.S. -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces are exempt from the ceasefire, with the Taliban saying they would continue to attack "foreign invaders", the Wall Street Journal reported.

"Hope the pleasure of shedding no Afghan blood in Eid becomes so overwhelming that rest of year is also declared as Afghan Eid", he said on Twitter.

His offer comes amid a rise in attacks by the insurgents, who have gained ground in recent months despite a surge in ground and aerial offensives by United States and Afghan forces.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which came a day after the insurgents stormed a military base in the western province of Herat, killing 17 Afghan soldiers.

Qureshi said eight militants were killed and nine wounded in the clashes.
