White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Canada on Sunday of making "polarizing" statements about the United States' trade policy, and said President Donald Trump had to pull out of a joint G7 statement because the Canadian president had "stabbed us in the back".

"He really kind of stabbed us in the back", Mr. Kudlow told CNN's State of the Union.

He departed early from the Quebec gathering Saturday for a one-on-one meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

Trump called Trudeau "dishonest & weak" after Trudeau said at a news conference that Canada would retaliate for new USA tariffs.

The prime minister said he told Trump that it was with regret that Canada would retaliate with equivalent tariffs on July 1.

"Canadians are polite and reasonable but we will also not be pushed around", he said.

"Very dishonest and weak".

Ontario premier-designate Doug Ford is also among those setting aside his political differences with Trudeau, re-asserting today that he stands "shoulder to shoulder" with the prime minister on trade.

Trump was doing Trudeau a favor by coming to Quebec for the G7 when he "had bigger things on his plate" with the North Korean summit.

Canada and Mexico are also taking action in retaliation. The non-factual part of this is - they have enormous tariffs.

But Kudlow probably didn't help the message he was sending to the Canadian leader by once referring to him as "Pierre Trudeau".

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., accused Trudeau of endangering the economies of both the US and Canada.

"He ought to come out and apologize in the name of the western allies", Kudlow said of Trudeau. "He essentially double-crossed him" - and that the prime minister should apologize. "He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with North Korea".

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that. he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak", Mr Trump said in his tweet.

Merkel said she first found out about Trump's decision on the flight back from Canada. The only G7 country that did not contribute was the U.S.

"We had extremely productive discussions on the need to have fair and reciprocal" trade, he said.

When Trump's tweets withdrawing support from the G7 statement hit on Saturday, the prime minister's office said Trudeau had not said anything in his closing news conference he has not said to Trump before.

Kudlow warned Trump would push back.

Harper added that, "it just seems to me this is the wrong target, and from what I understand of American public opinion, I don't think even Trump supporters think the Canadian trade relationship is a problem".

Donald Trump: Top economies should drop all tariffs
They should let Russian Federation come back in because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table". American tariffs are in response to Canada's tariffs of "270% on diary" delivered by the USA , he said.
