  • US Commando Staff Sgt. Alexander Conrad killed by Al Shabaab in Somalia

MOGADISHU-Somalia's Islamist group al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for an attack in which a US commando was killed and four others were wounded when they came under fire in the country. His death was the first USA military death in Somalia since 1993.

A helicopter was brought in to evacuate the wounded.

"Names are being withheld pending next of kin notification".

The military said earlier that four other USA service members were wounded in an extremist attack in Somalia.

Traditionally, US presidents have been wary of intervening in Somalia since 18 special forces soldiers died fighting militias in Mogadishu in 1993, a battle dramatised in the film Black Hawk Down.

This is the second USA military fatality in Somalia in the past year.

Alshabaab has intensified its attacks in the month of Ramadan with two other separate attacks launched on Friday night in Wajid in Bakool region and El Wak in Gedo region.

In early 2017, President Trump approved expanded military operations against al-Shabab, leading to an increase in US military personnel to more than 500 and the launch of dozens of drone strikes.

Friday's attack on the U.S.

Officials did not identify the attackers but say a larger force of Somalian and Kenyan troops were conducting an operation against al-Shabab militants.

The plan, first reported by The New York Times, would reduce the number of special operations forces from 1,200 to 700 over the next three years.

Somali officials have said civilians have been killed in more than one joint USA military operation with Somali forces. The injured have been treated and discharged to a U.S.embassy medical team in Kenya, the U.S. Africa command said Saturday.

This was the first public announcement of a USA military combat death in Africa since four US servicemembers were killed in a militant ambush in the West African nation of Niger in October. According to one military official familiar with the attack, the Special Forces soldiers had less than a month left on their deployment. The U.S. said its personnel had provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission.

And at least in Niger, U.S. Africa Command's General Thomas Waldhauser said commanders had been ordered to be "far more prudent" about the missions that were approved.

Whether U.S. forces in other parts of Africa have been asked to take similar precautions is not clear.
