  • Canada closer to legalising marijuana after senate vote in favour

If the legislation becomes law, Canada would be the first G7 country to legalize the drug.

Canada's Senate voted 56-30 on Thursday in favor of legalize marijuana for recreational use.

The vote on Thursday sends the bill back to the House of Commons, where members of Parliament will decide whether to accept the dozens of amendments added to the legislation by the Senate.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has committed to making marijuana legal by this summer. The sale for legal pot will start on July 1, Canada's national day.

After legalising medical marijuana in 2001, the Senate passed the bill with 52 votes in support and 30 against. In particular, producers are anxious about changes to Bill C-45 that will hurt their ability to brand and promote their products, limit the potency of some of their products and force them to provide more disclosure on their investors than other legal industries.

Another co-sponsor of the measure, Democratic US Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA, said in a statement that Washington "needs to get out of the business of outlawing marijuana". Henceforth, the Canadian government would allow four plants at home for personal use.

"Thanks to the Attorney General, more people feel the urgency of the moment in changing federal law on marijuana", Warren said.

The legislation would ensure states have the right to determine the best approach to marijuana within their borders, but some U.S. restrictions would remain, including recreational sales to people under 21.

"Canada is exporting all over the world right now". Gardner. I know exactly what he's doing. Warren said. "These archaic laws don't just hurt individual people, they also prevent businesses, who are in the marijuana business, from getting access to banking services".

"I believe, and I do fervently hope I'm wrong, that we will pay an intolerable price that we will regret", Patterson said, excoriating the government for inadequate consultation with Indigenous communities. "Criminal organizations make billions of dollars a year in profits on the sale of marijuana".

The Cannabis Act will also see strict regulation under federal, provincial and territorial governments who would share responsibility for overseeing the new system.

Pot sales would be through authorized retail stores much like the current situation regulating alcohol sales in Quebec and Ontario.

Because marijuana is an age-sensitive product, all California dispensaries are required to check customer IDs before sales, with a significant number of permitted pot shops scanning customer data into permanent profiles that are then kept on file. Speaking in early May, Mr. Trudeau said he viewed home cultivation as a key measure to fight the grasp of organized crime over the cannabis trade in Canada.

The government has also set aside funds to study the impact of legalized cannabis consumption on public health.

Canadian marijuana companies like Canopy Growth Corp, Aphria Inc, Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF and Aurora Cannabis Inc have been at the centre of investor frenzy surrounding attempts to legalize marijuana for recreational use nationwide.
