  • NASA peers into the rainfall of Eastern Pacific' Tropical Storm Aletta

Aletta has rapidly intensified into the hemisphere's first major hurricane for 2018 as the storm hits maximum sustained winds of up to 140 miles per hour, The Weather Channel reported. There is no threat to land. Some additional strengthening is possible through Saturday.

Tropical Storm Aletta is spinning more than 440 miles off the southwestern coast of Mexico and using satellite data, NASA peered into the storm to uncover where the heaviest rain was falling.

There is a tropical depression that could strengthen to a hurricane while moving northwest toward the West Coast of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting a near or above normal Atlantic hurricane season for 2018.

It was expected to become a hurricane late Sunday or early Monday, but was projected to weaken back to tropical storm force in cooler waters near the Baja California Peninsula. Its winds increased 65 mph in just 18 hours, between 5 p.m. Thursday, when it was first named a hurricane, and 11 a.m. Friday, when its rating shot up to Category 4. It is now rapidly weakening.

If it becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Bud.

The first hurricane, and the first major hurricane, of 2018 has formed (a major hurricane is considered a Category 3 or higher).
