5 things we learned from the Canadian Grand Prix

The Canadian Grand Prix weekend belonged to Ferrari and more specifically Sebastian Vettel.

Cue some serious work overnight, both in Montreal and at Ferrari's Maranello base with reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi putting in the miles in the simulator.

The four-time world champion will start tomorrow's race on the Ultrasoft tyres for the race after setting his fast lap in qualifying two on the purple set.

The Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas will also start in the front row.

"The team has been extremely strong in the past at keeping reliability on a high level so that is not a part that worries me, it is more we have seen today a Ferrari that is the stronger auto - strong in qualifying, strong in race and at no time we had a chance to fight for the win".

Although the race ended in slightly freakish circumstances, it began with huge drama after Lance Stroll and Brendon Hartley crashed on lap one. "All round they've been doing a slightly better job so we've got to do more".

"I think they've waited long enough for Ferrari to do well here".

"I was quite happy with my first run in Q3 but I knew there was something more in the vehicle for the first part of the lap", Vettel continued. Under the rules, the 70-lap race was cut short to just 68, though it didn't impact the result of the race among the points-scorers. With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's vehicle this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to auto issues at the start of the session. "But I love the idea, that's why I said yes even though I was pushing like fudge to get them in".

Mercedes were never in the victory equation, having not got engine updates ready in time for the race while Ferrari and Red Bull both had new parts.

Red Bull bringing Daniel Ricciardo in on Lap 18 meant an undercut on Hamilton when he returned to the track. I think: 'How can I better them?

He would have to settle for third, however, after a frenetic Q3 saw Bottas set a track record only for Vettel to break it moments later, before improving on it again ahead of the chequered flag.

"Our vehicle wasn't good enough, so I won't get too upset".

Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz of Renault, Esteban Ocon of Force India and Charles Leclerc of Sauber also finished in the points.

New Zealander Brendon Hartley will start in 12th for Toro Rosso. "We need to review procedures and make sure we have a very simple procedure for every circuit".
