  • Dustin Johnson cruised to a six-shot victory at the Fedex

It was a David and Goliath scenario, and - unlike the original tale - there was no upset this time around.

Beginning off No. 10 tee, World No. 121 Wesley Bryan tacked on a 4-under-par 33-33=66 in the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic, dipping two spots on the live leaderboard to T4 on 8-under 132, two back of 36-hole leader Dustin Johnson.

After a drive to the right side of the fairway on the 434-yard par-4 first hole, Thornberry had a 110 yard approach shot, setting himself up for the birdie.

"I knew I was swinging well", Johnson said after his round.

For those who are, in fact, looking for reasons to bet against him, here's all we've got: No one has ever won the U.S. Open a week after winning a PGA Tour event.

"I didn't really have it today, but I was able to close out the round with a couple of birdies and get it back to even and I'm in a decent position".

"I feel like my game is in good shape", he said.

"I can kind of control my own destiny", Johnson said.

At 3 under, Johnson opened with a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 10 only to bogey Nos. Johnson said the course and not playing only four times in April and May combined prompted his decision to play here before going to Shinnecock Hills.

Runner-up Andrew Putnam went into the final round with a share of the lead for the first time in his career.

Johnson was made aware of this on Sunday and shrugged it off, predictably.

"I had a lot of fun, and I felt like I handled myself better that my score looked", Putnam said.

"I'm glad it's over, for sure".

"I really like this golf course because you have to focus on every shot. Dustin obviously played pretty solid and I definitely learned from these experiences". He then put the finishing touches on his ninth win over the past two seasons with birdies on the 13th and 16th.

Gillman, the 20-year-old University of Alabama star from Austin, Texas, beat 16-year-old Annabell Fuller 5 and 4 to cap a flawless weekend at Quaker Ridge in the amateur competition.

"I was a little flat starting the day - I couldn't really get anything going", Johnson explained. "But I feel like my game s in good shape".

J.B. Holmes (67) was at 9 under. Brandt Snedeker (70) and Retief Goosen (66) tied four others at seven under.

Phil Mickelson had a 65 on Sunday and was at six under in a tie for 12th in a group which included Stuart Appleby, who closed with a 69.
