Apple is offering free keyboard repairs to MacBook and MacBook Pro customers who have been affected by certain keyboard issues. I was able to get it fixed for free because I had purchased AppleCare; the repairs could have otherwise cost me more than $700, based on the receipts given to me by Apple with the fix.

In case you have already paid Apple to fix the keyboard, you can call up the customer care centre. Users with affected keyboards can take their MacBook to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to determine whether they are eligible. Now having the same issue with my MacBook Pro and hearing countless others with the same experience, it seems it wasn't me after all. Service is free of charge for four years after the first retail sale of the computer. The new Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro is offers four years of coverage for 12-inch MacBooks 2015 to 2017 models and both 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros and 2016 to 2017 models.

These butterfly keyboards have proven divisive among consumers. Well, in 2015 Apple switched to thin "Butterfly" switches for the both MacBook and Macbook Pro lines of laptops.

We believe Apple is more likely to continue to refine the existing keyboard design in future laptops to address detractors' complaints than to go back to an earlier design. However, the keyboards have numerous passionate and vocal detractors who say that they're awful to type on, and who also cite reliability concerns.

In the same vein, it is worth noting that, prior to the announcement of the program, repairs involved nearly exclusively swapping out the entire top case of the keyboard. And unfortunately, fixing the problem isn't easy; at worst, it can involve replacing the entire keyboard.

Apple forums are overflowing with reports of Geniuses who have told customers that Apple is "collecting data" on the issue. If a laptop has other damage that has to be fixed before the keyboard can be replaced, Apple said in its service program page that a charge may apply. Users can alternatively mail their laptops to the Apple Repair Center.
