Apple AirPower Tipped To Launch September

Devices supporting Apple products have existed since the September release of the iPhone X; we tested three popular models from Mophie, Belkin, and RavPower in late October (spoiler alert: the RavPower Alpha Series Fast Charger blew away the competition).

Some of you might remember that Apple announced its AirPower wireless charging mat for multiple devices in September a year ago alongside its new iPhone. The company's engineers are still working to mitigate overheating issues on the charger, since charging up to 3 devices at the same time is likely to make it really hot.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is now aiming to release the AirPower charger either before or in September.

While one source said that some Apple engineers have been using the charging pads at their desks over the last few months, the team is still apparently working to ideal them.

AirPower, Gurman notes, it another step towards Apple's goal of a completely wireless future.

So, why has it taken so long for Apple, with all its design and manufacturing prowess, to deliver a simple wireless charging mat? Unfortunately, the accessory wasn't quite ready with Apple saying it would be offered sometime in 2018 but as we welcome the summer solstice, AirPower still isn't available. Speaking of the AirPods, Apple has yet to release the wireless charging case for that device.

Another reason for AirPower's absence since its announcement is that Apple wants to enable wireless charging no matter where you place your iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods on AirPower's surface.

"During the development of the iPhone X, Apple weighed removing the wired charging system entirely". Apple engineers have also had to work to eliminate bugs in its firmware.

Wireless battery chargers don't usually require processors and operating system software to operate.

The report cites third-party manufacturers who say this approach is more hard because it could require three different kinds of charging components for the respective Apple devices.

Wireless charging as a concept has been around since Nikola Tesla, a Croatian inventor, first suggested in the 19th century that you could transfer power between two objects via an electromagnetic field. For loyalists who own several Apple products, the AirPower charging mat is tipped to be a firm favourite. First and foremost, I think battery life needs to see a major improvement before Apple drops physical wired charging altogether.

The report states Apple was met with some technical hurdles while developing AirPower, with engineers originally hoping for a launch in June.

But Apple failed to launch or even publicly address AirPower delays since then.
