An early penalty from Carlos Vela put Mexico ahead, and Javier Hernandez's second-half goal secured the Central Americans' second straight victory after stunning reigning champions Germany in their opening game, despite a late consolation from Son Heung-min.

"They were probably thinking back to the history of [matches between] Germany and Mexico, Germany probably thought they would be able to win easily and Mexico probably prepared thoroughly".

The Second match of Day 10 of the World Cup sees Giant-killers Mexico facing South Korea.

But why are we becoming so infatuated with the Central American side? The responsibility is to play up to the high expectations everybody has of Mexico now.

How quickly things can change in the rarefied ecosystem of a World Cup. But a win will save them from some complicated number crunching and a cruel waiting game.

Mexico took the lead through a Carlos Vela penalty - the 14th of the tournament already - in the 26th minute after Jang Hyun-Soo's handball.

Mexico dominated the pace of play throughout (controlling possession for 58 percent of the match) and narrowly missed scoring several more goals.

Son, the team's star player, was left with too much to do up front.

All-time top scorer Javier Hernandez sealed victory in the second half, finishing off an unstoppable move from breakout player Hirving Lozano.

Chelsea star hopeful of Spain recall
It would be a shame to see them qualify, because against Iceland they looked bad , with no inspiration, nothing at all. Jorge Sampaoli's side are now on the brink of elimination.

A Carlos Vela penalty and a 50th worldwide goal for Javier Hernandez saw El Tri top Group F with a second win in a row following the 1-0 victory over holders Germany last time out.

Lozano's burst onto the world scene has been another revelation so far, turning the PSV Eindhoven winger into more than just the player whose nickname comes from a scary doll.

"We have beaten two brilliant and complicated teams, Germany and South Korea", Hernandez said. The match was foul-filled with South Korea committing 23 including two yellow cards. Gianluigi Buffon did also turn out at five tournaments but did not play in 1998.

"In the end we haven't achieved anything", said the 31-year-old. Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio, though, says his team won't be caught sleeping.

Mexico now know that they stand in a great position to qualify but it's not looking good for South Korea, who can only qualify if Sweden lose to Germany tonight and they defeat the Germans in their final group game. "Like a drowning man will clutch at a straw, we'll do our best to prepare for the match". In total, the game reached over 9.7 million viewers.

Mexico so far is one of the teams that has a ideal run in the campaign and has conceded just one goa.

The Mexican Football Federation was slapped with a fine of 10,000 Swiss Francs (US $10,120) after fans shouted the homophobic taunt during the team's 1-0 victory over Germany last Sunday.

Mexico were quick out of the traps in the opening half, pressing forward and passing well around the Korean team. Only Russia's Roman Zobnin (eight) has more. At the same time, South Korea lost the game against Sweden 0-1.

Son Heung-Min gave South Korea fleeting hopes of earning a point with a sublime, curling strike from 25 yards.
