Samsung would need to make an additional payment to Apple of almost $140 million if the verdict was upheld.

Apple alleged Samsung's Nexus Android phones infringed on Apple's patents, trademarks, user interface and style.

Apple and Samsung have settled their seven-year patent dispute over Apple's allegations that Samsung copied the iPhone's design and software, reports CNN. However, it did not specify the exact terms of the settlement made. Samsung would eventually be ordered to pay Apple $539m in damages, but not before the case went all the way to the Supreme Court and back.

Apple, if you recall, first sued Samsung back in April of 2011, alleging that Samsung's lineup of tablets and smartphones "slavishly copied" designs and features pioneered by both the iPhone and the iPad.

After the filing, "all remaining claims and counterclaims in this case are hereby dismissed with prejudice, to the extent such are still pending, and all parties shall bear their own attorneys' fees and costs", Justice Lucy Koh wrote in her order today.

"This case has always been about more than money", the statement read.

"We believe deeply in the value of design", Apple said recently, "and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers".

After a loss at trial, Samsung appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The case was keenly watched as a precedent for whether design is so important that it could actually be considered the "article of design" even in a product as complex as a smartphone.

South Korea-based Samsung declined to comment. Some of the specific features Apple feels Samsung stole include home screen app grids, tap to zoom, and "bounceback" scrolling. In August 2012, Apple won the initial jury verdict and was awarded $1.05 billion, but Koh ordered a retrial after deciding the jury added an extra $399 million for violation of additional trademarks that weren't included in the trial.
