Adding toppings to coffee like cream, sugar and whipped cream can also vastly increase calories, and possibly negate it's positive effects.

Feel free to reflect on it today at work, preferably while drinking yet another cup. However, the researchers stressed that the study only found an association with coffee and longevity and didn't prove that coffee leads to a longer life.

Volunteers for the study ranged from 38 to 73 years old, with a mean age of 57. The combined data showed that those who consumed a moderate amount of coffee, about three to five cups a day, were at the lowest risk for problems.

For those who drank six to seven cups a day, the risk was cut 16 percent, Loftfield said.

Overall, coffee drinkers were about 10 to 15 per cent less likely to die than abstainers during a decade of follow-up. Among at least the generally healthy individuals from the United Kingdom enrolled in this study, coffee drinkers seem to gain health benefits from the habit. However, the findings provide additional reassurance to coffee drinkers, while reinforcing previous research on the benefits of the beverage to human health.

[In 2014], a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies looking at long-term consumption of coffee and the risk of cardiovascular disease was published.

And some of their habits and characteristics might make these British coffee-drinkers look unhealthier to start with.

In a research study of almost 500,000 adults in Britain, those who consumed instant, ground and decaf coffee - even as much as 8 cups daily - had a slightly lower risk of death over 10 years than those who did not.

Another study of 185,855 multi-ethnic Americans confirmed that result, too. Additionally, it took into account a wide range of drinking habits, from no caffeine up to eight cups of coffee per day, while also exploring associations with decaf and instant coffee. Consuming two to three daily cups was associated with an 18% decrease in risk for early death.

Other research has indicated that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop various forms of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, depression, Alzheimer's, dementia, liver cirrhosis, and heart disease.

The latest study entitled "Association of Coffee Drinking With Mortality by Genetic Variation in Caffeine Metabolism", gathered the data and information on the participants from the UK Biobank.

Coffee contains more than 1,000 biological compounds, including potassium and folic acid, known to have an effect on the body, Loftfield explained.

"We know that some people metabolize caffeine quite slowly and are less tolerant of the apparent physical affects of caffeine, which of course comes from many sources other than coffee".

A new study adds to growing evidence that drinking coffee may help you live longer.
