This year, the insatiable Joey "Jaws" Chestnut ate 72 hot dogs (buns and all) in just 10 minutes, breaking his own world record.

Sudo won the women's competition Wednesday when she downed 37 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Sudo is a four-time victor herself, and a year ago she broke 40 hot dogs for the first time at the event, eating 41.

Since the first recorded contest in 1972, a total of 1,509 Nathan's Famous beef hot dogs have been eaten by participants. According to ESPN, Chestnut is now the most-decorated hot-dog eater the sport has ever seen, and, in this writer's humble opinion, it is only a matter of time before his name is whispered among other greats such as Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth and Walter Payton.

After Chestnut beat Takeru Kobayashi in 2007 for the title of top dog, winning the coveted Mustard Yellow Belt, he remained undefeated for eight straight years.

In 2016, Chestnut regained his title, eating 70 hot dogs. The under-counted tally was then displayed on live TV.

Chestnut ate 10 more dogs and buns than runner-up, Carmen Cincotti. Or, if you're Tucson's Michelle Lesco, 28 of them.

Fans, Americans, and hot dog-lovers alike celebrated Chestnut's win and new world record.

Thousands of attendees, many donning mustard-colored hot dog caps, braved 83-degree temperatures and a heat index of 91 degrees to witness the annual July Fourth competition on the Coney Island boardwalk.

Ten-time victor Joey "Jaws" Chestnut will confront 20 other men during the men's competition later Wednesday for the coveted Mustard Belt. The sport (though some critics refuse to acknowledge competitive eating as a sport), really came to a head when Takeru Kobayashi set a new standard in the event in 1997 after eating 50 hot dogs in the 10-minute span.

Miki Sudo is looking for her third consecutive win in the women's competition. She competed against 19 women this year. Five protesters were taken into custody for questioning and later released.
