  • Johanna Konta made it through to the second round of Wimbledon on Tuesday

Sharapova, playing Wimbledon for the first time in three years after missing 2016 through a drugs ban and 2017 due to injury, gave up the match on her 11th double fault.

It is Sharapova's first Grand Slam opening-round loss since she fell to another Russian, 58th-ranked Maria Kirilenko, 7-6 (4) 3-6 6-4, in the first round of the 2010 Australian Open.

With his 59th Wimbledon win, he equaled John McEnroe in fifth place on the list for the most men's wins at Wimbledon in the Open Era. She played all or nothing.

Then in the third set, the five-time grand slam victor was up by a break at 4-3. His run stretches all the way back to the 2001 French Open.

Petra Kvitova loses a point to Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus on Tuesday at Wimbledon.

"The transition from clay to grass has been tougher for me as I've gotten older", Sharapova said.

Kvitova has been prolific on the WTA Tour, winning five titles this year, but is struggling to make the same impact at grand slams.

"As a tennis player, when you win Wimbledon, I think it's winning the best tournament". She closed it out as Garcia lost her footing early in the second set and Bencic would build mountains of confidence out of this win and try to get back to where she rightly belongs.

"I've certainly made a lot of progress despite this result today", she said.

'There are some things I should have done better but she played some good points as well.

Kvitova might feel the same.

But Kvitova, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014, had insisted before the tournament that she wasn't the top contender after suffering a hamstring problem that forced her to pull out of Eastbourne last week. The hand isn't 100% and probably will never be, according to the 28-year-old.

Diatchenko received rapturous applause for her underdog fightback but the court rippled with disappointment that Sharapova had not been able to grasp the nettle. And former finalist Eugenie Bouchard won her fourth match - after qualifying - getting through wildcard Gabriella Taylor 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.

Indeed Kvitova has mostly sparkled this year in what has been a stunning turnaround - except at the majors.

A total of 228 were won between the two players with Diatchenko winning more points in front of the net while having a lower serve percentage than her counterpart.

That was a factor Tuesday, she admitted. You know, when I was kind of younger, I played better on the Grand Slams than the other tournaments.

"I tried", Kvitova added.

Sasnovich - a bubbly Belorussian - began the season in impressive fashion, making a final in Brisbane. She has the momentum and belief at the moment, I expect her to push through. Despite losing her own serve at the end, she broke one more time to level the match. Then, serving to stay in the match, Sharapova bowed out limply with a 10th double fault on match point sealing her fate.

Johanna Konta, who knocked out Halep on the way to the semifinals a year ago, made it through to the second round by defeating Natalia Vikhlyantseva of Russian Federation 7-5 7-6 (7). I will see how everything is going (smiling). "World Cup continues without us".

Though Sharapova has an enormous edge in Grand Slam experience it was the lower-ranked Russian who kept cool at crunch time. The Romanian got off to a good start by dispatching Japan's Kurumi Nara 6-2 6-4.

Defending champion Garbine Muguruza wasn't at her best but good enough to deny Brit hope Naomi Broady 6-2, 7-5.

Boulter is one of three British players left in singles after Katie Swan was beaten 6-0, 6-3 by 29th seed Mihaela Buzarnescu. Trying to repel one of Kyrgios' rocket serves, Istomin was floored but still made the return.

The 27-year-old Diatchenko took the court with a meager 8-25 career record, including just two main-draw Grand Slam victories.

Lopez, 36, said changes to his diet have proved key to his longevity. "I'm not a huge football fan but I was following the score", he told AFP. "I don't eat bread, only once in a while. And the rest I eat everything".
