Now, the plight of civilians Dawn Sturgess, 44, and Charlie Rowley, 45, of nearby Amesbury has unwittingly revealed that more Novichok may be out there.
British authorities confirmed that the Russian-made nerve agent, Novichok, had been used to poison two people Saturday in Amesbury, England. British Prime Minister Theresa May has blamed Russian Federation for the first poisoning attack - an assertion the Kremlin denies.
"It is completely unacceptable for our people to be either deliberate or accidental targets, or for our streets, our parks and towns to be dumping grounds for poison", he told parliament.
Russian Federation said Thursday it had offered assistance to Britain with the Skripal investigation, but that Britain refused the offer.
"My thoughts are with the people of Wiltshire", she added, referring to the county where the victims live and where the latest incident took place.
It was initially believed that the two patients had possibly been using drugs from a contaminated batch, police said.
Investigators are seeking clues after the two were exposed to the Soviet military-grade substance "Novichok". Britain has notified the global chemical weapons watchdog, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
A friend of the couple - now recovering in hospital - said Rowley was "garbling" and acting like a "zombie" before he passed out, according to The Mirror. They did not elaborate.
The British authorities say there was nothing in the background of the latest pair to suggest a link to espionage or to Russian Federation.

Police on the scene at Muggleton Road where a major incident was declared after a man and woman were exposed to an unknown substance on July 4, 2018 in Amesbury, England. "We're working extremely hard to try to understand the circumstances, the chronology".
Another unknown at this point is where exactly the two came into contact with Novichok. They returned later in the day when Rowley also fell ill. Health officials, however, say the risk to the public is low.
Later that night, Scotland Yard confirms that tests show the couple - who have still not been formally named, but are confirmed to be British - had indeed been exposed to the nerve agent.
Andrea Sella, professor of inorganic chemistry at University College London, said Novichok nerve agents were created to be quite persistent and did not decompose quickly.
Uglev said that A-234 could remain deadly for a long time - even if a few tiny drops are left in a syringe or impregnated into wood.
"Due to the unique challenges involved with this operation, police activity is expected to take weeks and months to complete", the Met said.
Only this can be said with certainty about the hit squad that came to Salisbury last March: they weren't very good.
The Skripal incident triggered a major diplomatic crisis, leading to Britain and its allies withdrawing diplomatic staff from Moscow and tit-for-tat expulsions by Russian Federation.
