  • Ranchi: Sister of 'Missionaries of Charity' arrested for illegal child trade

News reports that an An Indian couple said they paid 120,000 rupees ($2,354 USA dollars) for a newborn baby they obtained from a Missionaries of Charity home, in eastern India's state of Jharkhand. The matter was highlighted after the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Jharkhand approached the area police and filed a complaint in this regard.

Police in India are investigating employees of a charity set up by late Nobel laureate and canonized Catholic saint, Mother Teresa, over allegations the organization has been selling babies. According to police, they have admitted to their crime. "The whole congregation is shocked, and we are all praying about it", said a nun who has been with the organization for 20 years but spoke on the condition of anonymity because she is not authorized to comment on its behalf. However, the baby was taken back by the charity home with assurances of returning it back after court procedures.

'We hear that babies are being sold in other homes as well and are determined to put a stop to it, ' he said. Missionaries of Charity cut its ties with the new system because it remains opposed to babies being adopted to single women or unmarried couples.

"We are now investigating the sale of a newborn baby to a couple in Uttar Pradesh for 120,000 rupees", CWC chairman Rupa Kumari told the BBC."But the couple was told that the money was for hospital expenses". Indwar also said she had done it with the help of Sister Concelia, the officials said.

The home in India's Jharkhand state is run by Missionaries of Charity, and is now facing several accusations of the sinister practice. Supporters say this made the process faster and more transparent and allowed prospective parents to find children anywhere in the country.

Trafficking of children carries a sentence of 10 years in prison.

"We seized the register at the centre and found that the girl, who gave birth to the child that was sold to the couple, was brought in months ago, but this was not reported to the CWC".

She said their inquiry had revealed that the couple got the child in May and took it to Sonebhadra. She said the committee had discovered that other babies were sold to people in different cities for 50,000-70,000 rupees.
