Jabeur next heads to Budapest, where she'll play a $100k ITF clay tournament next week in an effort to make the cut for the US Open main draw.

Muguruza and Cilic's departures followed losses by pre-tournament women's favorite Petra Kvitova, former champion Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki, although the Dane faced the ever unsafe Ekaterina Makarova.

But the 21-year-old, who secured her first grand slam victory on Tuesday, showed significant improvement from that match to give one of tennis' brightest rising stars a decent test.

After her stunning loss Murguruza said "She played big today".

"I also think that my level today was not where I wanted it to be. It's a little bit sad... but she played great".

11th seed Angelique Kerber beat Claire Liu 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

A blazing crosscourt victor on break point gave van Uytvanck a 4-2 lead but Muguruza hit back to take the next three games and somehow survived the nervy first set when her whipped forehand licked the baseline on set point.

She and American seven-time champion Serena Williams are among a handful of favourites for the title. I still think the top players, their average level is higher than, let's say, sub-top players. "That's important because the support made us feel good".

Back on Centre Court, Rafael Nadal endured a hard second-round match on Centre Court with Mikhail Kukushkin, despite winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

"Yesterday he was playing so good, hitting the ball so hard that I couldn't do anything", Pella said.

Top-seed Simona Halep and seventh-seed Karolina Pliskova are the only players left in the top eight.

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev was teetering on the brink of defeat when he trailed Taylor Fritz of the United States by two sets to one when their second round tie was suspended for the night. Van Uytvanck was fearless and Muguruza was off her form. Pella himself seemed surprised at his mammoth victory.

Nick Kyrgios, seeded 15, unleashed 42 winners to see off Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.

Meanwhile, Johanna Konta's hopes of another deep run at Wimbledon came to an end at the hands of Dominika Cibulkova in the second round.

Van Uytvanck, who is ranked 47th in the world, stormed to a 4-2 lead in the second set and Muguruza's frustration was in full view. The 24 year old was down two games but recovered to win the next three and slide all the problems her opponent's way. "Hopefully it's going to be fine".

The Belgian broke five times in the encounter, including twice to begin the match as she won the first four games overall.
