Tropical Storm Beryl Forms in the Deep Atlantic

  • New predictions for hurricanes, storms in the Caribbean this season

Hurricane Beryl only kept its title for about a day, as the system was downgraded to a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center in its 11 a.m. advisory and weakened further in the 2 a.m. report. The National Hurricane Center gives this area around 400 miles off the east coast of Florida an 80 percent chance of becoming at least a tropical depression before the weekend is over.

Just hours after strengthening into a depression, Tropical Storm Beryl now has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph with higher gusts. The storm is forecast to become a hurricane by Friday or Saturday, but should get shredded by strong wind shear before it reaches the islands, forecasters said. In fact, this system will likely lose its designation in about three days - before it even reaches the Lesser Antilles islands.

"Places like the Lesser Antilles watch out because you could feel the effect of this by the weekend".

Regardless if it develops, this area of low pressure will track west-northwest, north and then northeast away from the USA coastline into the weekend.

A tropical depression forms when a low-pressure area is accompanied by thunderstorms that produce a circular wind flow with maximum sustained winds below 39 miles per hour.

Since small tropical cyclones like Beryl often have a tendency to strengthen quickly over a short period of time, some additional strengthening is forecast today.

A second tropical wave has developed in the eastern Atlantic several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, off Africa's west coast.

The system may move slowly up the coast, or, depending on the strength of a cold front crossing the state Friday night and Saturday, could stall and strengthen off the southeast North Carolina coast.

No watches or warnings for that storm have been issued.

The U.S. National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration said in late May that its forecasters estimated between one and four major hurricanes.

There are no tropical threats to South Mississippi over the next 5 days.
