The hurricane gained strength Friday morning and was a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of almost 80 miles per hour (130 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center. Hurricane Beryl is moving west at around 14mph with maximum sustained winds of around 75mph with higher gusts.
Beryl is expected to gain speed and move in a west-northwesterly direction through the weekend, and the weak Category 1 storm is expected to strengthen Friday, the hurricane center said.
"On the forecast track, the centre of Beryl will approach the Lesser Antilles over the weekend and cross the island chain late Sunday or Monday", the NHC advisory stated.
Beryl's impacts will begin to reach the Lesser Antilles late Sunday or Monday.
Satellite data indicate the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 miles per hour with higher gusts.
Meanwhile, the area of low pressure located a few hundred miles southeast of the North Carolina coast has developed into a tropical depression.
The community is also urged by Romeo-Marlin to monitor information from the Meteorological Department and the Department of Communication to stay informed about the storm's path.
Beryl becomes first named Atlantic hurricane of 2018
The system is forecast to move slowly northwestward and could meander or stall near the North Carolina coast over the weekend. It was located 1,045 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles on Friday morning and was moving west at 15 mph.

Tropical waves, the origin of many late summer and early fall hurricanes and the predecessor disturbance for Beryl, typically don't have enough moisture in July to become better developed.
Beryl, the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2018 season was headed for the Lesser Antilles, where it was expected to make landfall by Monday.
Earlier this week, the tropical meteorology research team at Colorado State University (CSU) Department of Atmospheric Sciences made adjustments to the original Atlantic Hurricane season forecast released back in early April.
