On December 16, 2012, six people gang-raped a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern in a moving bus in Delhi.

"It's a great message for the entire society".

Over the next few days, his brother Mukesh Singh, gym instructor Vinay Sharma, fruit seller Pawan Gupta, a helper on the bus Akshay Thakur, and the 17-year-old juvenile, who can not be named, are arrested.

All four maintain their innocence.

The Supreme Court reiterated today that the three sets of dying declarations of the December 16 gangrape victim Nirbhaya, including the one made through gestures, were "true, voluntary and consistent". The minor was tried in juvenile court and remanded to shelter home for three years before he was released in December 2015. Before facing the gallows, the convicts can also seek mercy from the President.

"Justice should be for everyone".

AP Singh, the lawyer for the convicts told ANI, "The sentence was upheld due to public and political pressure". This is rarest of rare in a death penalty award.Gratitude to all officers/experts who did a ideal investigation by a team led by then Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar.

In 2016, there were some 40,000 rapes reported in India, according to the most recent official figures available.

In recent months a string of sex attacks, mostly of children, have caused further outrage and protests.

The gang rape of an eight-year-old girl from a Muslim nomadic community in January has sparked more protests.

The girl from the northern Jammu region died after being kidnapped, drugged and gang raped by several men for days at a Hindu temple. On July 9, 2018 SC will decide the fate of the four accused of death sentence in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case.

"There is absolutely no link between death sentence and deterrence of crime".

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday will decide whether the four men who raped and tortured the medical student, who later came to be known as "Nirbhaya" or fearless, will have their death sentences reduced to life terms in prison. "Instead, the government must allocate adequate resources for the effective implementation of laws, improve conviction rates and ensure certainty of justice in all cases", Asmita Basu, Amnesty International India's Programmes director, said.

Out of the 371 death row convicts in 2017, 43 were awarded the ultimate punishment for crimes involving fatal sexual assaults.
