Here Are Trump’s Reported ‘Final Four’ Picks for Supreme Court Justice

  • Trump weighs top picks for Supreme Court amid last-minute maneuvering

In brief remarks, Kavanaugh, 53, described himself as "deeply honoured" and said: "Mr President, throughout this process I have witnessed your appreciation for the vital role of the American judiciary".

"Well, it's still - let's say it's the four people".

President Donald Trump's top contenders for the vacancy appear to be federal appeals judges Amy Coney Barrett, Thomas Hardiman, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge.

Kavanaugh has never directly ruled on abortion as a judge, so it's unclear how he would decide the subject.

But that doesn't mean Hardiman is out of the mix. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, told reporters that he was really pleased with the chance to confirm a second conservative justice to the Supreme Court in two years. "So, he would be the easy pick".

Like Kavanaugh, his wife, Ashley, is a veteran of the White House during George W. Bush's presidency.

Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said he's keeping an "open mind" on Kavanaugh's nomination.

The only public statement this weekend out of the White House about the impending selection, was a tweet Saturday by the president.

"Because he has written and spoken prolifically on many issues of deep concern, we believe his positions merit close scrutiny".

They are calling on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to wait until after the November election to schedule a hearing and vote.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said Trump's choice "could have a bigger effect on Americans' daily lives than any justice in our lifetime".

A conservative majority could also have implications for Mr. Trump himself if he gets into a legal fight with Robert Mueller - who is investigating allegations of collusion between Mr. Trump's campaign team and the Russian government in the 2016 election - over the special counsel's power to subpoena the President.

After Republicans won control of the Senate in 2014, McConnell became leader — and the confirmation of Obama's nominees started grinding to halt. Heidi Heitkamp - voted "yes" on the confirmation of his first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch.

But a detailed review of Collins's voting record reveals that she is anything but a maverick when it comes to the courts, consistently supporting nominees put forth by Republican presidents, indicating that activists and Democrats probably will be disappointed. Susan Collins, of ME, to speak out, told Stephanopoulos last week that a candidate who would overturn Roe v. Wade "would not be acceptable", because it indicates an "activist agenda" she didn't want to see in a judge. Dick Durbin, the Democratic whip, Sunday on NBC's Meet The Press. "Any judge on this list is fruit of a corrupt process straight from the D.C. swamp..."

He is now a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He also led the investigation into the suicide of Clinton aide Vince Foster.

"Even if they're pro-choice I think in this environment many of these people just want to blindly support President Trump, and any deviation from his agenda can be hazardous and invite a primary challenge". Kavanaugh's many written opinions provide insight into his thinking and also will be fodder for Senate Democrats who will seek to block his confirmation. The president's attention in the coming days will be on meetings in Europe.

During Trump's presidential campaign, he emphasized that he would appoint conservative justices to the Supreme Court bench if he was elected. And Feinstein's question was criticized as anti-Catholic.

Hardiman went to Notre Dame and Georgetown.

But she is also seen as potentially hard to confirm, given the narrowness of the Senate GOP majority, the previous controversy in her confirmation process when she was nominated for the federal bench a year ago, her lack of a deep judicial record of opinions and her openness to overturning Roe v. Wade. In another criminal case, he wrote that police do not have to obtain a search warrant to obtain a suspect's cellphone location information.
