North Korea lashes out at U.S., calls talks 'extremely regrettable'

  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo right and Kim Yong Chol left a North Korean senior ruling party official and former intelligence chief return to discussions after a break at Park Hwa Guest House in Pyongyang North Korea

North Korea has said the "attitude" of the United States was regrettable and not in the spirit of the June 12 summit in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

While few think that the world would be better off with increased tensions between the USA and North Korea - except perhaps national security adviser John Bolton - Trump's pathetic attempts at diplomacy have squandered an actual opportunity to move toward long-term peace.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed North Korea's accusation of a "gangster-like mindset" in denuclearization talks, saying the two nations had productive conversations that will continue in the days ahead.

The rhetoric issued by North Korea following the Pompeo meetings showed a return to sharp, provocative language, dangling the possibility of war if the USA continued to make demands.

After discussions in Pyongyang, North Korea's foreign ministry said that the United States was making unilateral demands aimed at forcing it into giving up its nuclear arsenal.

South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha said that the North had balked at a written pledge for "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" for historical reasons, but stressed that the goal remained the same whether or not that exact phrase was used.

On Sunday, Iowa GOP Senator Joni Ernst said the US should restart its military exercises with South Korea if talks don't continue.

The Trump administration has repeatedly offered economic incentives for North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

Following the June 12 meeting with Trump in Singapore, Kim made a broad agreement to "work toward denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

So it came as some surprise when North Korea's state news agency fired out a late-night missive blasting the talks, warning that "we may be shaken in our unshakeable will for denuclearization, rather than consolidating trust".

He said there were numerous UN Security Council resolutions demanding North Korea hands over its nuclear material. Lindsey Graham made on Sunday that China may be encouraging Pyongyang to push back against the deal because it is involved in a tit-for-tat trade war with the US. We are in a fight with China. Graham, a Republican, was referring to Trump's decision to impose tariffs on US$34 billion worth of Chinese products effective on Friday.

The regime's belief that the weapons are needed to deter a United States attack dates back almost 70 years to the still-unresolved Korean War, and will take more than a handshake to dispel.

In fact, near the end of the statement, KCNA quoted the spokesman as saying "we still cherish our good faith in President Trump". The ministry said Mr. Kim had written a personal letter to Mr. Trump, reiterating that trust.

"The establishment of peaceful relations between the countries, increased security assurances to North Korea and its people, and finally, denuclearization", Pompeo said. Some analysts think North Korea is trying to drag out talks in hopes that the U.S. will come around to accepting it as a nuclear weapons state, perhaps in a limited form that couldn't threaten the USA mainland directly.
