British Prime Minister Theresa May's Government imploded yesterday as Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson followed Brexit Minister David Davis in resigning over her plan for Britain's future outside the European Union (EU). But leading pro-Brexit lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg said he didn't think she would face a leadership challenge.

In case you missed it, Davis resigned late on Sunday night in protest at the prime minister's vision for Brexit which keeps more ties to Europe than he would prefer.

May told the House of Commons on Monday that her program - which would allow the free movement of goods, but not services - is the "right Brexit " because it would make it possible to avoid checks at the border between the republic and Northern Ireland.

We have postponed crucial decisions - including the preparations for no deal, as I argued in my letter to you of last November - with the result that we appear to be heading for a semi-Brexit, with large parts of the economy still locked in the European Union system, but with no United Kingdom control over that system.

Conservative MPs will then hold a series of ballots to whittle the list of contenders down to two, with the last place candidate dropping out in each round. "I get along with her very well, I have a very good relationship".

Two senior sources confirmed Mr Davis' departure from the Cabinet.

Letters calling for a leadership contest have reportedly been submitted to the backbench 1922 Committee by some Conservatives over the weekend. Euroskeptic Conservative lawmaker Peter Bone said party activists felt "betrayed" by the government plan.

She said: 'I am sorry - and a little surprised - to receive it [resignation letter] after the productive discussions we had at Chequers on Friday, and the comprehensive and detailed proposal which we agreed as a Cabinet'.

With less than nine months until Britain is due to leave the EU, May has been wrestling with how to enact Brexit without jeopardising business with the world's biggest trading bloc of 27 countries whilst forging new global deals.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson backed the proposals at Chequers, despite claiming that defending the plans was like "polishing a turd" during the meeting.

All eyes are now on the next move by Brexit hardliners in May's centre-right Conservative Party.

May must now move quickly to try to win the EU's support for her Brexit proposal to unblock talks.

The two resignations have left May badly exposed and raised questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursuing a "business-friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.

In a statement, May's spokesman said the prime minister will fight any attempt to oust her.

"The country is at a standstill with a divided and shambolic government".
