In one of the most-anticipated matches of the tournament so far, host nation Russian Federation crashed out of the world cup after losing to Croatia in the penalty shootout.

Dalic's men overcame an early Kieran Trippier goal to beat England 2-1 in extra time in the tournament's second semifinal on Wednesday, setting up a rematch of the tiny country's 1998 semifinal with France.

Fans in the capital of Zagreb felt every kick of their side's 4-3 penalty shootout win.

England's biggest gamble came in its final group-stage clash, against Belgium, where it rotated its side in a stodgy 1-0 loss to the Red Devils, but conceding first place in Group G appeared to put Southgate's side on the easier side of the draw.

Many locals gathered at the Brod Fortress, the main square, to tune in to see their heroes replicate the 1998 heroics and reach the semi final of the World Cup.

There have been some cracking games full of goals in the World Cup this summer, with very few matches leaving us dropping off on the sofa.

"I think Croatia will score but I think we'll score more", said England fan John Round. We showed a good attitude with commitment and fight from the beginning. I think we believe that we can improve a lot but we will try to do that.

"What our players did today, the strength they've shown, the stamina, the energy levels".

His friend Joe Carter, 43, from York, added: "We really thought it was going to be different - this was our chance".

"I'm happy I was part of this team, with this coach, and of our country's football for almost 20 years".

More than 24,000 fans attended a meeting with the national football team in Moscow to thank the players for their historic World Cup performance, which saw them progress to the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
